Greenlight Pinellas: Seizing & Knocking Down Homes and Businesses for “Progress”.

Greenlight Pinellas would create the highest sales tax in the state and take private property from individuals and turn it over to the government and large corporations. Another reason to vote no on Greenlight Pinellas

Greenlight Pinellas would create the highest sales tax in the state and take private property from individuals and turn it over to the government and large corporations. Another reason to vote no on Greenlight Pinellas

Are you on the List of property owners who will lose their property if Greenlight passes?

Greenlight Pinellas, the $2.4 billion street car system designed to go from St. Petersburg to Clearwater (not Tampa), will require demolition of houses, condos and businesses to lay the train tracks. Maps from the publicly available PSTA plans for Greenlight show the tracks going immediately through the middle of complexes in Pinellas Park, homes in St. Petersburg and condos in Clearwater. Businesses will also have to give up parking lots that are required by government regulations which could put them out of business and many will be knocked down. The government would undoubtedly use its “eminent domain” power to take these properties at lower than market value to build the Greenlight train. After the land is taken by the government, well-connected land developers, corporations and investment firms would make tens of millions off the properties that once belonged to others.

Lauren manor demolishPSTA CEO and Greenlight head Brad Miller has recently been shown to have been lying about his abuse of anti-bus bombing grants to promote Greenlight Pinellas. Miller has stated publicly that property owners affected by the train would be paid the value of their home as determined by the property appraiser. This can be significantly lower than “highest and best use” and prompt years of legal battles over seizure of the lands. In the end, given the ruling on the Kelo Case by the U.S. Supreme Court, property owners who are unwilling to sell will have their property simply taken by the government using their eminent domain power. The property owners are not likely to be fully compensated for either the fair market value of the properties or their legal costs.  Following is a list of areas affected by the Greenlight train if the highest sales tax in the state to fund it is approved by voters on 11/4.  This is what Greenlight supporters call “Progress”.

eminent domain Clearwater largoClearwater: Wells Court Coundos + 57 other properties

The “Wells Court” condos, part of “Old Clearwater City Flats” near the intersection of Myrtle Avenue and Turner Street. The Condos are in four story buildings with ground level parking under the three stories of units. There will be at least 57 other properties that will be torn down along the CSX line between East Bay Drive and Court Street. Most of these are homes and some are businesses, most with multiple tenants.  Most of the properties are owner occupied residences, but many are rental units. A list of those affected in Clearwater and Largo is provided below.

eminent domain PPPinellas Park: Lauren Manor Condominium, H&R Trains + Multiple Businesses

Lauren Manor Condominiums is located along the Southeast entrance ramp to Gandy Boulevard at US 19 and consists of several buildings. Four of these buildings would be demolished to make way for the Greenlight Train. There are multiple businesses along the south side of US 19 in Pinellas Park including Friends of Strays, business in strip malls, the parking lot of Rooms-To-Go, and McDonalds. Businesses along Haines Road would be knocked down between 62nd Ave N and US 19 with the most ironic being the H&R Trains Store! Every business along this stretch of Haines road would lose parking or have their buildings at least partially demolished for the train.

eminent domain st peteSt. Petersburg: Homes along 62nd Ave N and multiple businesses

As previously described, the train will travel down the middle of 62nd Ave. N, removing driveways, lawns and requiring at least partial demolition of some homes. Business along the CSX rail ling between I-275 and 14th St. N would also be demolished or encroached by the train.
