A Woman with a relapse of lung cancer has new hope for life today thanks to members of the community and here family. Last week Deborah Shorter discovered she needed life-saving radiation treatment to stop tumors in her brain. Deborah had beaten the odds and survived 6 years after being told she would live no more than a few months in 2009. However, because of the Medicaid HMO she was enrolled in, her choices of medical treatments were limited due to lack of coverage with her long-standing doctors. That is when she, her family and doctors took action to make sure she would get rapid access to high quality care she preferred. After only 10 days, over $8,500 had been raised by the community to help Deborah Shorter. Thanks be to God.
Dr. McKalip, her neurosurgeon, has spearheaded efforts to make sure she can get the care she need as quickly as possible. Local doctors have been working to make sure that she gets scheduled for care right away. Facilities and doctors have also agreed to offer discounts to make sure there will be no problem getting Deborah the life-saving treatment she needs.
Local citizens proved they can help people with serious medical problems by coming together on their own. This shows that when government programs fall short, there is no need for more legislation and government mandates. There is only the action inspired by Jesus Christ – our Lord and Savior: “love your neighbor as you love yourself!”
